Learning Outcomes |
Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Students will be able to describe psychological and physiological effects of substance use and behaviors as well as describe the appropriate use of legal drugs and supplements. Course emphasis is on pharmacological effects of addiction, tolerance, dependence, cross addiction, drug interaction, withdrawal, and recovery. 2. Students will Describe the behavioral, psychological, physical health, and social effects of psychoactive substances on the person using and significant others. 3. Students will Understand the addiction professional’s obligations to adhere to ethical and behavioral standards of conduct in the helping relationship. 4. Students will Be familiar with medical and pharmacological resources in the treatment of substance use disorders. |

Determination of Final Grade |
Final Grade Determinations: This course is mainly reading, lectures and memorization of information as it relates to various drug classes and how they interact in the brain and body. Study Guides with study quizzes are available for each chapter . Course Grade will be based on exams, discussion boards, attendance and participation. Final Grade Determined by the following: Chapter Tests=45%, Discussion Boards =35% Attendance & Participation 10% Final Exam covering all chapters = 10% |

This course is going to be a hybrid course. This means that part of the course will be In person and other weeks we will have assignments and information Online in Blackboard. Refer to the calendar for a basic idea of when you will be meeting in class or online. This course is going to be heavy reading material, power points presentations, videos and lectures. This is a 3 hour course, and as such it is highly recommended that you set aside 3 hours weekly for this course in order to stay on task and do well. The information builds on the foundations of chapter 1 & 2 and each week the new material will assume you have a basic understanding of the previous week. Since this course has some basic neurology as a foundation, an introduction to the nervous system and brain anatomy will be incorporated in week 2 In person lecture. ATTENDANCE POLICY: This class was published as an in person class, in person attendance on the dates that are posted will be considered in your attendance grade. * * Timely assignments on black board are counted as attendance in class. Research has shown a strong positive relationship between attendance, participation and college success. I strongly suggest regular participation in this course, both mental and physical. 1. On the date of an in person class, Students on campus but not in class are considered absent. 2. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor prior to any absence. 3. Excused absences include hospitalization of you or an immediate family member, participation in a college event, or a religious holy day. Prior notification to me for pending absences due to college events or religious holy days is required. Documentation of hospitalization is required. |

Privileged information that is shared may under NO CIRCUMSTANCES be repeated or shared outside the classroom. I will be available to any student who wishes to discuss private matters regarding material in class/ If you feel you need professional counseling services, the College has a counseling center available to students, or I can furnish a referral for you. The student is ultimately responsible for his/her own learning and professional growth, what you put into it is what you will get out of it! It is your responsibility to conduct a realistic self-appraisal of what you personally need to master and how you can best attain it. Challenge yourself to grow as an individual and a professional. |
